Root Canal Therapy in Calgary, Alberta

One of the most common procedures performed at our practice is root canal therapy. A root canal is performed when the dental pulp inside your tooth becomes damaged or infected. Dental pulp has the important function of supplying the tooth with essential nerves and nutrients to keep it healthy and strong.

Root canals have a reputation for being extremely uncomfortable, but with modern tools and dental practices, they have become significantly more manageable. They’re both faster, and considerably less painful than they once were.

At the earliest stages of damage, it’s possible to save the tooth without resorting to a full root canal. This can be done by addressing whatever the root cause for the damage happens to be. Root canals tend to become necessary as a result of significant cavities that are left untreated, exposure to bacteria, or due to trauma. If, for example, your Calgary dentist treats a cavity early, as a result of your diligence in scheduling dental check ups, a root canal can be avoided.

However, if the dental pulp becomes damaged, it can possibly die, causing the tooth to die as well. To prevent this from happening, a root canal may need to be performed. This procedure removes the damaged or infected dental pulp, and the inner pump chamber is thoroughly cleaned and refilled with a special dental material. The tooth is then topped off with a dental restoration, such as a dental crown, porcelain inlay / onlay to protect the tooth and ensure that it stays healthy and strong.
