Tooth Extractions

When a tooth becomes damaged or broken because of injury or disease, it isn’t always possible to save the tooth. When this happens, the tooth needs to be removed.

Aside from damage and disease, there are a variety of other reasons teeth may need to be removed. This includes:

  • Extra teeth are preventing your other teeth from erupting correctly
  • Certain orthodontic treatments such as braces, which may require extracting a tooth to make room for the other teeth that are being shifted into place.
  • Certain medications can compromise our immune systems, making us vulnerable to infection. Infected teeth need to be removed promptly.
  • Patients who are undergoing radiation therapy on their heads or necks may need to have teeth in the radiation field removed to facilitate treatment.

Individuals who are set to undergo an organ transplant may also need to have a tooth extracted if it’s vulnerable to infection. Individuals who have undergone an organ transplant are more likely to develop serious infections because they may need to take medication that suppresses their immune system to prevent their body from rejecting the new organ.

Wisdom Teeth

Our wisdom teeth are located at the very backs of our mouths and are the third and final set of molars to erupt. They typically erupt during our late teens or early twenties. Some individuals may have enough room in their mouths to accommodate their wisdom teeth, but most of us wisdom teeth end up causing problems.

Some wisdom teeth are not able to fully erupt, causing them to become either partially or fully impacted. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause severe damage to your jaw and surrounding teeth and partially impacted wisdom teeth (which are still covered by some gum tissue) are very difficult to clean, making them a breeding ground for harmful bacteria. Both fully impacted and partially impacted wisdom teeth must be removed.

Dental x-rays, which your dentist may perform during your exam, can give your dental team an idea of where your wisdom teeth are, allowing them to better decide which treatment option is best for you.

Having the ability to perform tooth extractions, including wisdom teeth extractions and other oral surgery treatments in-house allows us to offer a holistic dental experience and better meet your needs.

If your dental team determines that your wisdom teeth will need to be removed, they will discuss your options with you and then schedule your surgery. They will also walk you through the surgery itself, let you know what to expect during your recovery, and teach you how to properly care for your teeth and gums while your mouth heals.

Extraction Site Preservation

Whenever a tooth is removed, you and your dental team will need to decide what to do with the void where the tooth used to be. If the tooth that needs to be removed isn’t a wisdom tooth, then the tooth will need to be replaced to prevent bite issues and other periodontal problems. A missing tooth can affect your ability to speak and chew.

There are several replacement options for your extracted tooth, including a dental implant, fixed bridge, or partial removable denture. Your dentist will examine your mouth carefully and advise you on the best course of action.

Bone Grafting

Bone grafting involves taking a piece of bone from one part of the body and attaching it to another. This procedure can be used to accommodate dental implants or other restorative dental services, as well as during periodontal procedures.
